ClINTON KEW was rapt to receive Leader's Junior Sports Star of the Year because it meant he got a day off school.
The Year 5 student's absence was sanctioned by Templestowe Park Primary School and his parents, who attended the presentation evening where Clinton received his winner's medal and a $300 Sportsmart voucher.
Dad, Keenan, said his 11-year-old son was proud to receive the accolade for his taekwondo achievements.
"The sport star awards give real inspiration," Mr Kew said. "It's really great that we are nurturing the young kids in their sportsmanship. I think the award will make him train a bit harder now.
He's looking forward to competiting in the world's first cadet black belt championships in New Zealand in April.
Clinton will have to keep his Sportsman voucher hidden, though. His two sisteres have asked whether they could spend the money on new gymnastic gear.
Mr Kew acknowledged Doncaster's Joon No's Taekwondo School and Master No for helping Clinton on his taekwondo journey and the support of his primary school.
